International design bible Wallpaper* has named Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of OMA’s MPavilion as one of the top buildings that shaped culture in 2017.

The article, published on Friday 15 December, celebrates “the best examples of the smartest new builds, canniest restorations and smoothest extensions that are upgrading the experience of life in our cities and communities across the globe”. Forty-seven projects feature on the list, including some of the world’s biggest names in architecture: Herzog & de Meuron; Renzo Piano Building Workshop; Nendo; MVRDV; Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG); Diller Scofidio + Renfro; and Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines.

OMA founder and MPavilion 2017 co-architect Rem Koolhaas said, “MPavilion is such a small intervention in Melbourne, a city of four million people, but it plays such a huge role in the community.”

MPavilion 2017 is one of only two Australian buildings included in the list—the other is the Australian Islamic Centre in Newport, Melbourne, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Glenn Murcutt AO, with Hakan Elevli. Also named in the list is another project by OMA, ‘Concrete’, a transformed warehouse and multi-purpose venue in Dubai.

MPavilion 2015 architect Amanda Levete of AL_A is also featured, for the sleek new quarter of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, comprising a performance space, art handling units, a cargo entrance and a modern courtyard.
